Coal Stove c. 1840s

The beautiful coal stove in the photo below is currently in storage at the Homestead. We were not sure of the time period, so we did some research. We found a similar stove in the book "Cast With Style." That coal stove was designed and manufactured by James Wager in Troy, NY c. 1840-1843. With the West Bedroom floor recently reinforced with steel beams, we now have the option of returning our stove to where it once stood when Annie Gates lived in the manor house.

Surprise Lilies

Every year around this time, the Surprise Lilies appear at the Homestead. The grey-green foliage appears in spring but dies back by summer. In late August, the slender stems rise up and surprise us with clusters of fragrant, pink star-shape flowers.
